FOI REF: FOI-2023-1573

You asked

I am seeking confirmation of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination status of those individuals passing away in England & Wales, whose death certificates mentioned COVID-19 since the 1 January 2023 to date.

For example, for week 44 in 2023, 10,983 deaths were registered in England & Wales of which 332 deaths mentioned COVID-19. What was the COVID-19 vaccination status of those 332 individuals?

Thank you for your request.

We currently hold data for deaths by vaccination status between April 2021 and May 2023 which can be found in Table 1 of the following publication: Deaths by vaccination status, England - Office for National Statistics. For this analysis we define a death as involving COVID-19 if either of the ICD10 codes U07.1 (COVID-19, virus identified) or U07.2 (COVID-19, virus not identified) is mentioned on the death certificate. This covers people aged 10+ that could be linked to Census 2021 with an NHS number. It is important to consider however the populations targeted for vaccination and the age-standardised mortality rates should be used to compare rates between vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals.

Unfortunately, we do not hold any further information on this topic. In order to provide the further information requested, we would need to create new information. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, public authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. The information is therefore not held for FOI purposes.
