You asked

I would like to know the exact numbers of deaths with Covid-19 as the cause of death from February 2020 to date of you processing my request by week.

Please can you give me the numbers for those with the virus and being treated for the virus in old peoples homes, nursing homes and residential homes for the same time frame, can you tell me of those how many died and how many survived.

Please can you give me the numbers for those with the virus and being treated for the virus in hospitals for the same time frame, please can you state whether they were in ICU or normal wards.

Please can you tell me how many people treated for Covid-19 in hospital for the same period left hospital alive and of those how many subsequently died, and a break down of their cause of death, again in the same time frame.

Finally if it is possible can all the figures be broken down into age demographics.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please see the following downloadable dataset, which can be located under Figure 2 of our Deaths registered weekly in England and Wales publication. This provides a weekly breakdown of deaths both 'due to COVID-19' and 'involving COVID-19'. Please also see the following dataset, which accompanies our weekly publication. The tabs named 'Covid-19 – Weekly registrations' and 'Covid-19 – Weekly occurrences' show deaths from COVID-19 broken down by 5-year age bands on a weekly basis.

COVID-19 deaths occurring in care homes and hospitals can be found as part of our weekly publication Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board. However, unfortunately, we are unable to ascertain how many care home deaths were discharged from hospital prior to their death, as this information is not recorded on the death certificate.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to disaggregate deaths by place of occurrence broken down by age demographics or cause, as this would be disclosive. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual. This includes those who are deceased. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individual businesses can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44 is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied. The following publication describes in more detail our disclosure policy for births and deaths data. Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics.

Data from our COVID-19 infection survey refers to infections within the community population; community in this instance refers to private residential households and it excludes those in hospitals, care homes and/or other institutional settings. Additionally, we do not have access to hospital admissions, treatment, and discharges. Therefore, we do not hold the information regarding infections and hospital admissions, treatments, and discharges that you have requested. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer this part of your query. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk, and by telephone at 0300 303 5678.
