Please provide statistics of violent crime in a number of areas of Wales, including Cardiff, Abercynon, Bangor, Tonyrefail, Swansea and Merthyr from 1970 to 1990.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on violent crime for the areas and years you are looking for.

We hold figures on the levels and trends of crime in England and Wales, primarily based on two sets of crime statistics: the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime data collated on behalf of the Home Office.

We produce a breakdown of police recorded crime data by Community Safety Partnership (CSP) area, which includes Cardiff and Swansea. However, these tables are only for the years ending March 2021 to the year ending December 2023.

The Home Office publish historical crime data tables, recorded by the police. They include data on violent crimes from 1898 to 2001/02. However, they are not broken down further than England and Wales. They also publish data tables which are broken down by crime type and Police Force Area for the years 1990 to 2001/02.

The Home Office provide us with police recorded crime data so they may be able to assist you further and can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

We do produce violent crime data from the CSEW, but unfortunately we do not hold data at the level you have requested. Regional data (including South Wales and North Wales) can be found in our nature of violent crime: appendix tables from March 2017 onwards. We also publish CSEW violence data from January 1981 in our quarterly appendix tables at a country level for England and Wales.
