You asked

I am writing to ask if it would be possible for crime statistics to be released for the city of Manchester.

I would like to know if statistics for violent crime, assault, and drug use in the inner city and central city were available for the years 1986 to 1997.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We produce statistics from two main sources, the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and Police Recorded Crime (PRC). Our publications and data concern crime as it is experienced by victims, or as it is recorded by police across England and Wales.

Unfortunately, we do not hold CSEW information by city.

PRC data is supplied to us by the Home Office, which can be broken down by Police force area; for Manchester this is 'Greater Manchester.' You can find the latest police recorded crime by Police Force Area (PFA) in Crime in England and Wales: Police Force Area data tables in table P1. We also publish data by community safety partnership (CSP) where Greater Manchester is broken down into several smaller areas including 'Manchester'. There is also more CSP data in the Home Office tables linked below.

The Home Office open data tables and historical crime data tables may be able to provide the historical data you need, otherwise you can contact the Home Office at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you have any further questions, please contact us at crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk.
