Thank you for your enquiry regarding the number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing people affected by hate crime.

We do not collect or hold police recorded crime (or third-party data) on hate crime so unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with the number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing people affected by hate crime.

Police recorded hate crime data are supplied to the Home Office by the 43 territorial police forces of England and Wales, plus the British Transport Police. Hate crime data from 2011 to 2017 broken down by offence type is available on their website following this link;

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/hate-crime-statistics

You may wish to contact the Home Office directly to find out if they hold data on the number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing people being affected by hate Crime. The Home Office can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.

In relation to your question regarding the number of Deaf or Hard of Hearing people affected by hate crime recorded through third parties. You may wish to contact the British Deaf Association as they may be able to help you further. A contact form is available on their webpage;

Whilst your request relates directly to police recorded crime we would like to point out that the Office for National Statistics, Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) does include some information on hate crime which you may find useful. The survey asks respondents with hearing difficulties whether any crime related incident they have been a victim of in the previous 12 months was motivated by the offender’s attitude towards any disability they have. It may be possible to use this information and provide similar information to that requested, although as the number of respondents from the survey would be small it is likely that we would only be able to produce the analysis for overall crime by combining a number of years data together to provide a single estimate. If this is something you would be interested in please contact the crime statistics team directly at CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
