FOI Ref: FOI/2021/3280

You asked

Please could you provide me with the number of vehicle-related fraud incidents in England in Wales in 2020/21 (whichever data you have that is most recent).

If possible, could you also provide the number of vehicle-related fraud incidents over the past five years.

We said

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the specific data that you have requested, however, hopefully you find the following information helpful.

We use two sources of data to produce official statistics on fraud. The first is the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), a household victimisation survey. The second is incidents referred to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) by Action Fraud.

Appendix table A1 from our Crime in England and Wales publication provides the number of incidents of different types of fraud from the CSEW. While we do include some breakdowns of different types of fraud, we don't publish statistics on vehicle-related fraud specifically. Appendix table A5 provides breakdowns of fraud offences from Action Fraud and the NFIB however, the only vehicle-related fraud offence include is 'DVLA Driving Licence Application Fraud'.

If you have any further questions, the Home Office may be better placed to help as they supply the data from NFIB to us. They can be contact at the following email address: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you have any other crime-related queries in the future, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
