The following information was published on 3 July 2020:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsinvolvingcovid19inthecaresectorenglandandwales

It includes vitally important information on deaths of care home residents broken down by week and local authority. The data ends while the dying are still in their hundreds each week and I was hoping you could provide the data to fill the gap.

Please provide updated information on how many care home residents are dying (from COVID-19 and all cause) each week in each England/Wales by local authority. That is death of care home residents, as opposed to deaths in care homes, as often care home residents will die in hospital.

Thank you for your enquiry.

The following data set https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsinvolvingcovid19inthecaresectorenglandandwales has been discontinued. Consequently, we do not hold an update on this specific dataset.

However, care home deaths are included in the following two weekly death outputs: Death registrations and occurrences by local authority and health board and Number of deaths in care homes notified to the Care Quality Commission, England.

These publications are updated every Tuesday. These datasets show deaths by all causes and COVID-19 at local authority level. They also show death data by place of occurrence.

Unfortunately, these datasets do not show data for those who usually reside in care homes, but died elsewhere, for example, in hospital. Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with this specific information, as we do not hold data on the place of residence of the deceased, only the postcode area. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer this part of your request, as they hold this type of data. They can be contacted via email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

If you have any questions relating to the above datasets, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
