You asked

I am trying to get an objective picture of immigration into the UK. Please could you confirm I have understood your figures correctly;

Immigration less Migration = 248, 000 Figure less International Students = 56,000 Figure less British immigration (looking for work) = 20,000 Therefore, there were only 20,000 non-British immigrants who arrived in 2016.

A total of 9,634 people were granted asylum or an alternative form of protection in year ending (YE) March 2017, a grant rate of 32%. In addition, 5,453 people were granted humanitarian protection under the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme in YE March 2017.

I would also like to know if those figures include dependent visas (those over 18 years)? It would also help me if all the above information would be in a table according to British immigration, the various EU categories and non-EU citizens.

Thank you for your enquiry about international migration in 2016.

Net long-term international migration (LTIM) was estimated to be +248,000 in 2016 (immigration less emigration). LTIM estimates are based on data from the International Passenger Survey (IPS), with adjustments made for asylum seekers, non-asylum enforced removals, people resettled in the UK under resettlement schemes, visitor and migrant switchers and flows to and from Northern Ireland.

Net long-term international migration of non-British citizens was estimated to be +308,000 in 2016. The inflow of non-British citizens was estimated to be 514,000 in 2016. Estimates of citizenship by reason for migration are based solely on IPS data. In these cases the IPS totals will not match LTIM totals, but will give a good measure of magnitude and direction of change.

In the LTIM and IPS estimates reason for migration is as reported by respondents to the survey. Figures relating to visas are produced by the Home Office and include long-term and short-term migrants and their dependants.
