You asked

Please supply data on young people, under 30, having heart attacks after having the COVID-19 vaccine over the past 3 years.

We said

Thank you for your request.

ONS mortality data are based on the information collected at death registration. The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules.

We do not hold the information you have requested about people under 30 having attacks after having a COVID-19 vaccination as whether a person was vaccinated prior to their death is not recorded on the death certificate.

You may find the following information useful:

The number of deaths where an adverse reaction to the COVID-19 vaccine was mentioned on the death certificate can be found in Table 12 of the  Monthly mortality analysis publication. This information cannot be provided at a more granular level, such as age group, because any further breakdown would result in data that are potentially disclosive.

Numbers of deaths by underlying cause, sex, five-year age group and area of usual residence for England and Wales, 2013 to 2020, are available via the NOMIS webservice.

Myocardial Infarction (Heart attack)

I21 - Acute myocardial infarction

I22 - Subsequent myocardial infarction

I23 - Complications following acute myocardial infarction

Please follow these instructions to use the NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography - (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Latest provisional death registration data for England and Wales, 2021 and 2022, are available in our weekly deaths and Monthly mortality analysis publications. Data for 2021 and 2022 are still provisional, so full cause of death information is not yet published. Finalised death registration data for 2021 will be released in July 2022 in our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS.
