Thank you for your enquiry.
We publish mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales, using the information provided on the death certificate. Diabetes may be mentioned on the death certificate if the doctor believes it was related to the death, however diabetes would not be mentioned on the death certificate of all persons who had the condition. Therefore the number of deaths where diabetes was mentioned on the death certificate would be an underestimate of all persons whom had diabetes when they died.
Our mortality statistics are based on the underlying cause of death, which is coded using version 10 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10). The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:
- the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death
- the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury
Deaths where the underlying cause is diabetes mellitus, would be assigned the ICD-10 codes to E10-E14.
For 2013 to 2017, mortality statistics for England and Wales, by sex, 5 year age-group (<1 , 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19 etc... up to 90+) and underlying cause are available from our explorable dataset:
https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73
For previous years, this information is available in table 5 of deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR):
Other special extracts and tabulations of deaths data for England and Wales are available (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs, where appropriate). You can contact the team directly at: vsob@ons.gov.uk
Mortality statistics for Northern Ireland are available from: https://www.nisra.gov.uk/statistics/births-deaths-and-marriages/deaths
Mortality statistics for Scotland are available from: https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/deaths
Figures from each separate website can be combined to calculate the total deaths with an underlying cause of diabetes mellitus in the UK.
