We said

Thank you for your enquiry requesting the top 10 causes of death in the UK for 2019, 2020 and 2021 from 1 January to 16 August.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Unfortunately, we would be unable to provide you with leading causes of death by this specific date range. In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

The Monthly mortality analysis publication provides a breakdown of leading causes of death in England and Wales from July 2020 to July 2021. This is the latest data available. August data for 2021 will be published on September 23 2021.

We also have the following user requested datasets which you may find useful:

Provisional leading causes of death by month of death registration and country, England and Wales: deaths registered January to June 2020 - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)

Deaths by leading causes groupings by month of occurrence, England, 2015 to 2019 - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)

The top 20 leading causes of death in England and Wales, for the period 2019 to 2020 annually, are available to download via NOMIS. This is an interactive web service that provides mortality statistics for England and Wales, broken down by calendar year of registration, age, sex and area of usual residence.

To create your own bespoke tabulations of mortality data within NOMIS, please follow these instructions:

  • Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.

  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available). A full cause of death (ICD-10) breakdown is available for selection, as well as a list of the 47 leading causes of mortality.

  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

If this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on monthly leading causes of death for 2019 and 2020, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
