We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of births data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the births certificate at birth registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Multiple Births and multiple still birth rates

All data we publish on multiple births can be found in tables 13-16 in our birth characteristics datasets.

2021 data will be published in late July/August 2022.

Twin Pregnancy Gestation and perinatal death rates

We do not hold analysis of twin pregnancies by your specific gestation periods of

  • Between 26-30 weeks gestation
  • Between 30+1 and 32-weeks' gestation
  • Between 32+1 and 34-weeks' gestation
  • Between 34+1 and 36-weeks' gestation
  • After 36+1 weeks gestation

We also do not hold analysis of the perinatal death rates or numbers of twin pregnancies.

We can create this as a user requested data set for you. Special extracts and tabulations of births data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).  Please note as mentioned above any user requested data sets will only include England and Wales and not the UK as a whole.

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to the HALE Customer services team on Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Unfortunately, we do not hold data on bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular haemorrhage with dilation of the lateral ventricles (Grade III) or intraparenchymal haemorrhage (Grade IV), neonatal sepsis and necrotizing enterocolitis,

We also do not hold data on the number of monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies.
