You asked

Can the below request be separated into each financial year:

From the financial year April 2017 to March 2022 what is the gender split for drivers in the following occupation categories: Road Transport, Large goods vehicle, Van, Bus and coach, Crane, Fork-lift truck, Agricultural machinery, Mobile machine drivers and operatives

I am aware there is ONS data published in October 2021 on the drivers by industry, but I am specifically requesting data on the number of men and number of women drivers across the above occupation categories.

2) I am submitting an FOI request for the following information that I'd like to obtain from the ONS Labour Market. Can the below request be separated into each financial year:

  • Crane drivers
  • Fork-lift truck drivers

  • Mobile machine drivers and operatives

We said

Thank you for your request.

We estimate the number of people employed in different occupations using the Annual Population Survey (APS), a survey based on interviews with members of private households in the UK.

Occupations are classified based on the Standard Occupational Classifications for the UK (SOC). Currently the survey is transitioning between coding occupational information based on the 2010 version (SOC2010) and 2020 version (SOC2020) of this classification framework. The two versions are similar in their classification of drivers, but not identical. Your descriptions appear to align with SOC2010 occupations:

821     Road Transport Drivers

8211   Large goods vehicle drivers

8212   Van drivers

8213   Bus and coach drivers

8221   Crane drivers

8222   Fork-lift truck drivers

8223   Agricultural drivers

8229   Mobile machine drivers and operatives not elsewhere classified

You should be aware that the hierarchical structure of the classification means that Minor group 821 will include the Unit groups 8211-8213, along with 8214 Taxi and cab drivers and chauffeurs and 8215 Driving instructors.

We publish a breakdown of SOC2010 occupations by sex on our Nomis website. By changing the period on the top of the table you can access estimates from January to December 2004 to the latest period. Alternatively, you can access the dataset behind that table and produce your own analysis.

We do not routinely produce any analysis that breaks these occupations down by industry, even at a broad industry grouping level.

However, the information you have requested is available to order from our Labour Market team. Such services are subject to legal frameworks, resources, and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact social surveys team to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there will be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, even if only accessible on payment, Section 21(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
