FOI REF: FOI/2023/4798

You asked

Could you please give me the total of deaths in the UK from 2018 to now.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In collaboration with these organisations, we publish headline data as part of our Vital statistics in the UK: births, deaths and marriages publication. Data for United Kingdom and constituent countries are available from 1887 to 2020. 2021 data will be published on 24 February 2023.

If you have any queries regarding the data for Scotland or Northern Ireland, please contact NRS and NISRA directly at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Deaths registered in England and Wales 2021 and 2022

We hold the following analysis Deaths registered in England and Wales 2021,  this provides registered deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death, leading causes of death.

Mortality data for 2022 is still provisional and subject to change, this is to allow the inclusion of death registrations which are deaths that have been referred to Coroner for further investigation. Typically, these deaths have around a six-month delay in registration, therefore we will publish Deaths Registered in England and Wales 2022 in July 2023.

However, provisional monthly data is published as part of our Monthly Mortality Analysis . Year to date figures for 2022 are available in table 10 of this dataset.

Data for January 2023 will be published on 23 February 2023.
