​​Please supply the total number of deaths in the UK, by month, for all of 2020 and also for 2021 (ytd). Can you also give me the 5 year average (by month).

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We hold the following analysis Monthly Mortality Analysis which will provide deaths registered in England and Wales, by month and 5 year average for 2020 and 2021. Latest available data is September 2021. Data for October will be published on 23 November 2021.

Reference table b also provides 5-year comparison of deaths registered by month.
