Please provide quarterly total mortality rates for the first and second quarter of 2020 in England and Wales.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with total mortality rates for the first and second quarter of 2020 nor the total mortality rates for all four quarters of 2009. In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis for you. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests.

Finalised death registration data for 2006 to 2019 are available on the ONS website via the following link: Death Registered Series. This publication includes rates for each calendar year. However, unfortunately they are not available by month.

We may be able to create a bespoke output for the 2009 data requested. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there will be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

This publication does not include rates, however if you wish to calculate your own rates you may find the following link to rate calculation tables useful: Rate calculation templates. The latest population estimates available are for 2019 and can be downloaded via the following link: Population estimates for the UK.

The following publications includes age standardised rates for all causes of death, but because the focus of this report is on COVID related deaths, rates are only available for March and April 2020: Deaths involving COVID-19. This publication is provisionally scheduled to be updated on 28 August 2020 and will include figures for June and July 2020. The rates presented in this publication are provisional and are based on 2019 population figures because 2020 population figures are not yet available.
