Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with the total mortality rate for the first and second quarters of 2020.  In order to fulfil this request, we would need use a high level of statistical skill and judgement in order to create a bespoke analysis for you. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests.

However, please see the following link to the Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales publication which contains provisional figures for 2020. This publication does not include rates, however if you wish to calculate your own rates you may find these rate calculation templates useful. The latest population estimates available are for 2019 and can be downloaded here:  Population estimates for the UK.

A full breakdown of rates for 2020 is expected to be available in the annual deaths registration publication, which is expected to be released in July 2021.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk
