2015 to 2019
Annual death registration totals are available within our annual Deaths Registered Series, with the total figure for England, Wales and local authorities published in table 2. Annual data is available up to 2019. The annual dataset for 2020 is scheduled for release in July 2021.
You can also extract this information for England and include other variables i.e. age, sex, cause via our online explorable datasets.
NOMIS - Interactive web service that provides mortality statistics for England and Wales (including some subnational geographies) broken down by calendar year of registration 2013-2019, age, sex, underlying cause of death and area of usual residence of the deceased. Data for 2020 will be published on NOMIS and released in July 2021.
- Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).
- Select Age - All ages or 5 year age bands.
- Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
- Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
- Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available).
- Select format (Excel or CSV for example)
2020 to 2021
Provisional monthly death registration data for 2020-2021 are available via the ONS Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales dataset. Monthly deaths are available up to April in the 'figures for 2021' table. Data for May will be published on 18th June 2021. These figures can be summed to give you a comparative total for England.
