Thank you for your enquiry.

Deaths in England and Wales 2018, 2019 and 2020.

You can find total deaths in Deaths Registered Series for England and Wales.

Deaths registered in England and Wales

In 2019, there were 530,841 deaths registered in England and Wales, whereas in 2018 there were 541,589 deaths.

Deaths registered series for 2020 will be published in July 2021, however total deaths for England and Wales can be found in our Excess deaths registered in 2020, England and Wales. There were 607,922 deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020.

Suicides

The latest available annual suicide data is 2019

We produce provisional suicide data for England on a quarterly basis, with the latest update including deaths from October to December 2020 and provisional data for January to March 2021 which was released in April 2021.  The publication explains that most suicides require an inquest, where a coroner must investigate the cause of death. The amount of time taken to hold an inquest causes a lag between the date the death occurred and the date the death is registered.

We refer to this as a registration delay and registration delays for deaths caused by suicide tend to be five to six months on average. Because our data is based on death registrations, this delay means that most deaths recorded for 2020 so far would have occurred in 2019. More detailed information can be found in the publication.

Our next Suicide in England and Wales publication is scheduled for release in September 2021, which will include 2020 data.  As such, the information you have requested is considered exempt under Section 22(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, whereby information is exempt from release if there is a view to publish the information in the future. This exemption is subject to a public interest test. While we recognise the desirability of information being freely available, we also acknowledge that public authorities must have the freedom to be able to determine their own publication timetables. This allows them to deal with the necessary preparation, administration, and context of publication. Furthermore, public interest is best served through the public having confidence that the information published by ONS is accurate and final. Release on an ad-hoc basis would not achieve this aim and will cause unnecessary confusion if they were to be misrepresented. In this case, exempting the information clearly outweighs the public interest in disclosure.

COVID-19 deaths

Using Figure 2 of our Deaths registered weekly publication, from 1st January 2020 to 4th June 2021 (latest available data) there have been 138,465 registered deaths involving COVID-19. For the same period there have been 123,774 registered deaths due to COVID-19. This publication is updated every Tuesday.

We use the term "due to COVID-19" when referring only to deaths where that illness was recorded as the underlying cause of death. We use the term "involving COVID-19" when referring to deaths that had that illness mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, whether as an underlying cause or not.

Using the same publication, in the COVID-19 weekly registrations tab there have been 221 registered deaths age 0 -- 29 since January 2020 to 4th June 2021.
