We are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales. This is driven by information collected from death certificates at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
Annual mortality figures for England and Wales can be found in our 'Deaths Registered Series', registering deaths by age, sex, selected underlying causes of death and the leading causes of death. Contains death rates and death registrations by area of residence and single year of age. Annual data is available up to 2019. The annual dataset for 2020 is scheduled for release in July 2021. Total deaths from all causes can be found in Table 1.
Provisional weekly death registration data for 2020 is available via the following publication: Weekly deaths bulletin . Weekly deaths are available in the 'weekly figures 2020' table, this is updated every Tuesday at 09:30.
