You asked

How many total deaths by month from 1st January 2000 to 21st December 2020?

We said

Thank you for you request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data in England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificates at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Please see the following publication: Deaths registered monthly in England and Wales. This includes a monthly breakdown of deaths by all causes and area of usual residence. This data is available from 2006 to November 2020 (provisional). The next update is scheduled for release on 26 January 2021, which will include the December figures.

Updates can be monitored using our release calendar.

Please also see the following link to our Weekly deaths bulletin. This has mortality figures up to week ending 25 December 2020. This is updated every Tuesday at 09:30.

The following publication provides monthly deaths from 2001: Monthly deaths, England and Wales, deaths that occurred between 2001 and 2018. This data extract was produced as an adhoc request and is based on death occurrences, not registrations.

In order to provide monthly deaths for 2000 to 2001, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

If you would like to discuss these statistics further, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk.
