Total excess deaths as a percentage of the population size for the last 10 years:

In order to provide total excess deaths as a percentage of the population for the last 10 years including 2020, would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

However, this information from 2010 to 2019 may be available to commission as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy. 2020 data will available to order once data are finalised in the summer of 2021.

You may find the analysis we hold regarding excess deaths in England and Wales in 2020 of interest. This is published weekly within our Deaths Registered Weekly publication.

We also have the following User Requested Data sets available on Excess deaths:

Weekly provisional excess deaths 2020 for regions in England and Wales

Provisional weekly death registrations and percentage of excess deaths for selected causes, deaths registered in 2020, England and Wales

Deaths from all causes 2010 to 2020 in the UK and deaths as a percentage of the population size:

We hold the total number of deaths registered in the UK from 2010 to 2019. These figures and figures showing the number of deaths per 1,000 of the population can be found via the following link to a previously answered FOI: https://www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/totalukdeaths2010to2020

We do not hold the total number of deaths for the UK as a whole for 2020. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) would be better placed to provide death totals and deaths as a percentage of the population size for Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

However, you may find the following information useful:

We hold the total number of deaths for England and Wales from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 in the following publication, which may be of interest: https://blog.ons.gov.uk/2021/01/12/counting-deaths-involving-coronavirus-a-year-in-review/

The following dataset provides crude mortality rates (per 100,000 population) from 1938-2020 (please note, 2020 data is still provisional) in England and Wales: Annual deaths and mortality rates, 1938 to 2020 (provisional).
