Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, I am writing to request and be given the top twenty leading causes of death in the UK in 2020.

Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold all the information you have requested. NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

The top ten leading causes of death in England and Wales in 2020 are published as part of our Monthly Mortality Analysis release, accessible via the following link: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/monthlymortalityanalysisenglandandwales/december2020#leading-causes-of-death

In order to provide the top 20 leading causes of death in England and Wales for 2020, we would need to create bespoke analysis. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Once 2020 have been finalised in the summer of 2020, we will be offering our bespoke services for 2020 data.
