FOI Ref: FOI/2021/3173

You asked

Please could you supply cardiothoracic and cardiological deaths 2015 to 2021 showing the number of deaths in each year and the following age ranges in each year:

  • under 18
  • 18-30
  • 30-50
  • over 50s

Please could you include yearly deaths 2015 to 2021 due to thrombosis, being clear to show how many deaths in each year ; further broken down with each death categorised in the following age ranges for each year:

  • under 18
  • 18-30
  • 30-50
  • over 50s

I am interested in events that lead to strokes in all age groups.

I am unsure of the coding you use to record strokes, but all thrombotic and embolic events that lead to strokes would be appreciated. Please also include survival and fatal events.

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for producing mortality statistics for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2019 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Cardiothoracic and cariological:

There are a number of ICD-10 codes that are attributed to deaths of a cardiothoracic and cariological nature, these codes have been listed in the previous FOI response, along with an extraction of the deaths by five-year age groups from our Nomis webservice.

If you would like this information by the specific requested age groups, this can be provided via our bespoke services. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk to discuss this order.  As this information is reasonably accessible via another route, Section 21(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.

Thrombosis:

Deaths due to arterial embolisms and thrombosis are coded to the ICD-10 code I74.

Please see the accompanying spreadsheet named FOI_3173_Thrombosis, which provides deaths due to thrombosis by five-year age group from 2015-2020. This information has also been extracted from our Nomis webservice.

If you would like to obtain this information by the requested age groups. This is also something that we can produce as a bespoke request. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk as listed above. Therefore, Section 21(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies to this information.

Strokes:

Data for deaths due to stroke are also available via our Nomis webservice. The relevant ICD-10 code for this is I64. Please see the accompanying download named FOI_3173_Stroke to view this information.

Unfortunately, we do not hold information on those who have suffered or survived a stroke. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer this request. They can be contacted by email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.
