Thank you for your query regarding statistics on those self-employed.
Unfortunately, we do not hold a register of self-employment.
However, we do produce statistics relating to self-employment from the Labour Force Survey (LFS).
According to the latest statistics, published on 19 May 2020, during the period January to March 2019, there were an estimated 4.930 million people in the UK who were in employment and considered themselves to be self-employed.
This estimate is published as part of our monthly labour market statistics and can be found in the following table, along with the estimates for each three-month period following that date.
We do not produce estimates of the number of people who consider themselves to be self-employed who are the sole earners within their household.
We also do not hold any information on the numbers that would be paid under the Construction Industry Scheme, or regarding whether people have filed tax returns. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) may have more information regarding the filing of tax returns.
