Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.

In order to provide the number of death certificates that mentioned COVID-19 and pneumonia, and the number of death certificates that mentioned pneumonia and influenza 2017 to 2019, we would need to create a bespoke analysis or table. Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Public Authorities are not obligated to create information in order to respond to requests. We therefore consider this to be information not held.

Finalised mortality data (up to 2019) is available to commission as bespoke analysis. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.

Mortality data for 2020 is expected to be finalised and published in summer 2021 following registration delays due to coroner's inquests. Following this, 2020 mortality data will also be available to order as bespoke analysis.

Please contact us at health.data@ons.gov.uk if you would like to discuss your request further.
