We are responsible for the production of statistics for births registered in England and Wales. This is driven by information collected from birth certificates. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.
We routinely publish Baby names in England and Wales; the latest publication relates to the year 2021. This includes breakdowns for boys and girls. We do not report middle names or surnames.
The release of baby names data for 2022 and 2023 is currently under review, and ONS will publish its plans once this review is complete.
In the meantime, if this does not meet your needs, we may be able to create a custom output. Information on baby names, along with other special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
