Thank you for your query regarding suicide deaths within the veterinarian profession in the UK.

We publish suicide statistics for England and Wales. We are unable to provide statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland, this data is reported by National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.

Our mortality data is based on the death registration process, using information taken directly from the death certificate. Ethnicity is not recorded as part of the death registration process and does not form part of the death certificate. We only hold information that is recorded by a doctor, or information about the cause and circumstances of death which are provided by a coroner.

Therefore, for we do not hold data on suicide attempts, nor do we hold mortality data broken by ethnicity.

The following publication on Suicide by occupation England and Wales 2011 to 2018 Registrations provides annual figures for England and Wales for suicides amongst veterinarians from 2011 to 2018 split by sex.

We are unable to provide 2019 statistics as these have not yet been finalised. Suicide registrations 2019 will be published in September 2020.

Suicides by IMD (Socio Economic) is available in the following user requested dataset;

Suicides by IMD quintile and Single year of age in England registered between 2003 and 2012

Any updates to this user requested dataset would need to be commissioned via our bespoke service. Further information on IMD is available in our Methodology Socio economic classifications guidance.

We may also be able to provide a monthly breakdown; this would also need to be commissioned as a bespoke analysis. Such services would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate.

NHS Digital may be better placed to assist with your enquiry regarding attempted suicides.
