You asked

Please may you provide me with answers to the following:

1) The number of suicides in full-time students aged 18 years and above, by sex, registered in England and Wales in 2020.

2) If possible, could you break it down by university as well?

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you have requested. We previously published a user requested adhoc extract on Suicides in full-time students aged 18 years and above, by sex, registered in England and Wales between 2010 and 2019.

Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). We may be able to produce the data for 2020 for you, following the release of the 2020 finalised death registration dataset. Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

Place of death is recorded as part of the registration process however ONS do not routinely aggregate suicide figures down to individual establishments as such data is likely to be assessed as disclosive. Therefore, we are unable to a split by university. This is in line with our disclosure control policy: Policy on protecting confidentiality in tables of birth and death statistics.

If you would like to discuss your request further, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
