Thank you for your enquiry.
The information we have available on student suicides can be found in an ad-hoc piece of analysis looking at student suicide using data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) which is available on our website:
This includes the number of higher education student suicides from 2000/01 to 2016/17 by age group, type of study and whether the student was in the first year of study or not. Details of the course and university the individual was studying at are not available.
The data accompanying this article is available here in an Excel format: https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/estimatingsuicideamonghighereducationstudentsenglandandwales
It is important to note that these statistics do not include students in further education, for example those who attending colleges and sixth form schools.
We are not able to provide names, dates of birth or address information about any individual from the data we receive on death registrations as this is considered personal information. Under s.39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act (SRSA) 2007, personal information held by us, must not be disclosed. Because the release of this information is prohibited by another enactment, s.44 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 applies.
We can provide the number of overall suicides per year by key variables such as age, sex and geographical area. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). If you wish to discuss your data requirements in more detail you can contact the Mortality Analysis team at mortality@ons.gov.uk.
