You asked

Could you tell me an estimate for number of people who suffered from a stroke in England in 2020 compared to 2021?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry regarding estimation of the amount of people suffering from a stroke in England.

Unfortunately, we do not hold information on those who have suffered with stroke, nor are we able to estimate the prevalence of strokes. NHS Digital may be better placed to assist with this enquiry. They can be contacted by email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk. Further information on the prevalence of strokes in England is available from The Stroke Association

However, we do hold mortality data regarding strokes. Annual mortality data by cause from 2013-2020 is available as part of our explorable dataset on our NOMIS webservice. This explorable dataset can be used to search for deaths by the Internation Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) code I64 -- Stroke.

Please see the following instructions for how to use this service:

  •       Select the geography (England and Wales, regional or by local authority).

  •       Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands.

  •       Select Gender - Total or Male/Female

  •       Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.

  •       Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available or use I64)

  •       Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

We hold provisional raw mortality data for deaths in 2021. Finalised annual mortality data will be published once 2021 mortality data has been finalised in July 2022. This will include deaths by leading cause.

However, should you wish to obtain deaths from stokes before this is released in July 2022, we can create a custom output providing deaths registered by specific ICD-10 code for 2021. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

If you require any further assistance please feel free to contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
