You asked
Would you please provide me with information on the average age of someone suffering a stroke both in the UK and worldwide?
Also, please provide up to date statistics of strokes in the UK and those that cause death?
We said
Thank you for your request.
The mortality data published by ONS are derived from the formal process of death registration. For Scotland and Northern Ireland statistics please contact National Records Scotland and NISRA respectively.
All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2019 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. Stroke is coded under the ICD-10 code 'I64'
We do hold mortality data by cause up to 2020 in our death registered series. Please see 'Table 12: Years of life lost due to mortality'. The mean age of death by sex is calculated for cause groups I60-I69 Cerebrovascular diseases, of which includes I64 stroke. We do not hold a published individual calculation for I64. This may be something we can produce for you as a bespoke request. Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).
Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
We do not hold information on those who are suffering with stroke as this would likely be sourced via patient records. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your enquiry. They can be contacted by email at enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.
