You asked

I would like to examine how many South Asian women have been or are currently in violent relationships.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the data you require in the exact breakdowns you have requested.

Our most recent data on the prevalence of domestic abuse in the last year by ethnicity can be found on the ONS website in table 6 of our Domestic Abuse Prevalence and Victim Characteristics, year ending March 2024 dataset. This table contains data for Asian or Asian British people, it does not categorise victims as South Asian, and it is not possible to separate Asian from Asian British within this group. The Asian or Asian British ethnic group is further subdivided into Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Other. Unfortunately this table is not broken down by sex, so it is not possible to identify how many of these victims were women. Prevalence of domestic abuse broken down by age and sex only is available in tables 1a, 1b, 2, 3 and 5.

In the same dataset, we also publish police recorded crime data on the number of victims of domestic homicide by ethnicity however, Asian victims will fall under the "other" category and we do not hold information disaggregated further. Please note, "domestic homicide" encompasses incidents where the suspect was either family or a current or ex-partner. Police recorded crime data is produced and supplied to us by the Home Office. If you have any further questions on this source, they will be best placed to help and can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk

You may also find our data on domestic abuse victim services useful, accessible on the ONS website. These tables detail the personal characteristics of people contacting these services. Breakdowns by ethnicity can be found in tables 1, 12, 16 and 18a. Unfortunately these tables do not disaggregate by sex and ethnicity combined.

If you have any further questions, please contact CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
