FOI ref: FOI/2022/4530

You asked

I would like to make an FOI request for the smoking related mortality statistics for 2020 and 2021 (and any available statistics for 2022).

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

We do not hold information on deaths caused by smoking specifically. When we release cause of death data, this is derived from the death certificate. We would be able to extract data of deaths from common smoking related diseases, however we would not be able to confirm whether or not the deceased were in fact smokers.

We would suggest that NHS Digital will be better placed to help you with the data you require, as they publish statistics on smoking-related deaths in England. They can be contacted on enquiries@nhsdigital.nhs.uk.

In case it is of interest, the latest data we have available related to smoking habits are Adult smoking habits in England 2020, Adult smoking habits in Great Britain 2020 and Smoking prevalence in the UK and the impact of data collection changes. Adult Smoking Habits in the UK 2021 is provisionally scheduled to be published on the 4 December 2022.  The final release date will be confirmed on our Release calendar.
