You asked

Please supply the reported figure of sexual harassment cases per industry in the UK over the last 10 years (if records go back that far, if not the last five years will suffice)?

Could you also tell me if the victims of those cases were male or female?

For example, the hospitality industry had 2,000 reported cases of sexual harassment (1,200 female, 8,00 male) or the retail industry had 1,000 reported cases of sexual harassment. The classification of sexual harassment is the whole spectrum, ranging from reported verbal cases to convicted sexual assault cases.

Thank you for your request.

Unfortunately, we do not hold any information on the number of reported sexual harassment cases per industry in the UK, however we hope you may find the following information helpful.

Our main sources of data on crime statistics are the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and police recorded crime. The CSEW is a victimisation survey asking households about their experience of crime in the previous 12 months.

The most recent police recorded data on harassment and sexual offences can be found in table A4 in our Crime in England and Wales: Appendix tables, which we released alongside our quarterly Crime in England and Wales statistical bulletin.

Our latest sexual offences publication Sexual offences in England and Wales overview: year ending March 2020 brings together data on sexual offences from the Crime Survey for England and Wales and police recorded crime.

Table 22 in the accompanying Sexual offences prevalence and victim characteristics, England and Wales dataset presents figures on victim-suspect relationship of police recorded sexual offences data from the Home Office Data Hub (15 forces). CSEW estimates for sexual assault and rape by personal characteristics (including the respondent's occupation and employment status) are also available in Table 5.

These data only cover England and Wales. Information on crime in Scotland can be found here, and information on crime in Northern Ireland can be found here.

If you have any crime-related queries in the future, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
