You asked
Please provide me with the following:
Data into sex-related injuries and deaths for the most recent year you have data available for (e.g. 2020):
- Overall number of injuries caused by sex-related activities in 2020
- Estimated cost to the NHS of treating such injuries
- Overall number of deaths caused by sex-related injuries in 2020
By 'sex-related' I am ideally hoping to cover all consensual sexual activity (including oral, vaginal, anal, etc.) and excluding any related to sexual assault.
I understand that the injuries/deaths may not be cited as such, so I have sourced some potentially relevant ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Codes that I might be able to reference (with a disclaimer) in case these are of use to you when collating the data.
These include:
- S30 Superficial injury of abdomen, lower back, pelvis and external genitals
- S32 Fracture of lumbar spine and pelvis
- S33 Dislocation and sprain of joints and ligaments of lumbar spine and pelvis
- S34 Injury of lumbar and sacral spinal cord and nerves at abdomen, lower back and pelvis level
- S35 Injury of blood vessels at abdomen, lower back and pelvis level
- S38 Crushing injury and traumatic amputation of abdomen, lower back, pelvis and external genitals
- S39 Other and unspecified injuries of abdomen, lower back, pelvis and external genitals
- T18 Foreign body in alimentary tract
- T19 Foreign body in genitourinary tract
If possible, please also provide this information by 5-digit ICD-10 code.

Unfortunately, we do not have access to hospital admissions and discharges for specific causes and injuries. We also do not hold any information relating to NHS costs. Therefore, we do not hold the data you have requested regarding injuries and costs. NHS Digital may be better placed to answer your query. We hold the following mortality analysis Deaths Registered in England and Wales 2020. In table 8, we produce deaths by external cause by secondary cause. From row 230 to row 357 shows the S code deaths by sex. Row T749 to row 758 shows the T codes. However, this publication will not provide the circumstances surrounding the death.
We do not code our data by 5-digit ICD-10 code, which you have referenced in your request. Therefore, we are unable to provide deaths coded in this way.
However, we can provide you with a bespoke output with four-digit ICD-10 codes as the secondary cause (S and T codes), whilst looking at specific circumstances surrounding the death. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs.
