Scotland influenza and COVID-19 deaths

You asked

​Please supply the following information:

• How many people have died in Scotland, UK from Covid-19 only and no other health conditions

• Split the figures into variants as well as a total figure

• Total amount of people who have been died from influenza (common flu) for the years 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021

Thank you for your enquiry regarding COVID-19 deaths in Scotland.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We do publish headline COVID-19 deaths for the UK and Constituent countries in our Deaths Registered weekly in England and Wales publication. Table 8 provides daily deaths by date of death registration for 2021 and 2022 for COVID-19 deaths registered in Scotland and United Kingdom. Table 9 provide deaths by date of occurrence for 2021 and 2022.

However, as this data is supplied to us by NRS and NISRA we do not hold information for Scotland on pre-existing conditions or COVID-19 variants.

We publish COVID-19 deaths by pre-existing conditions for England and Wales as part of our Monthly Mortality Analysis, in case this helpful.

Deaths due to influenza for 2018-2021 in Scotland

We do not hold deaths by specific cause for Scotland.

However, deaths due to influenza are published as part of our Deaths Registered Series for England and Wales, data are available for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

Provisional data regarding deaths due to pneumonia and influenza for 2021 data is published in our Deaths registered weekly publication. We will publish influenza deaths separately on both NOMIS and as part of the Deaths Registered series in July 2022.
