You asked

I am writing you in relation to FOI-2024-2365. I am kindly requesting:

  1. The lowest granularity of official number of Romanian nationals residing in the United Kingdom? E.g. postcode sector, LSOA?

  2. The lowest granularity of the workplace population by Romanian passport?

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Request.

We did not collect Nationality data from the Census, but we did collect Country of Birth and Passport Held:

This data is for England and Wales only. You may wish to contact the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) for data for Northern Ireland and the National Records of Scotland (NRS) to request this data for Scotland.

We also offer Census 2021 ad hoc tables that can be commissioned to your own specification, which you may find useful. Such services are subject to legal frameworks, resources, and disclosure controls (the smallest granularity of data will depend on disclosure protection) however we may be able to produce datasets down to either LSOA or Postcode Sectors. There will also be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy. Please contact census.customer.services@ons.gov.uk if you would like to discuss these services further.

We also collect workforce population by passports held via the Annual Population Survey (APS). Our APS datasets include variables for nationality, while the quarterly Labour Force Survey (LFS) datasets include both nationality and passports held.

While the datasets contain geographies to Local Authority level, the available sample size for Romanian nationals and/or passport holders is low, meaning that the lowest geography for which we can provide robust estimates is International Territorial Levels (ITL) 1 regions, as detailed on our international geographies page. You can request an output of this data via our Social Surveys team by emailing socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk, subject to the same terms and conditions referenced above.
