Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of mortality and births statistics. These are derived from information collected at the registration of the birth or death. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We do not hold data on the number of reported or diagnosed cases of Myocardia in the UK. For further information on the number of reported cases of Myocardia please contact the following Health agencies who are better placed to answer your enquiry.

The British Heart Foundation also produce statistics showing the number of Myocardial Infarction diagnosed in the UK.

We do hold information on deaths. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) the coded mortality data available up to end of December 2021 is coded to version 2014 of the ICD10 framework. From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

The ICD-10 for deaths due to myocardia are:

  • I21 - Acute myocardial infarction

  • I22 - Subsequent myocardial infarction

  • I23 - Complications following acute myocardial infarction

We have published mortality data by cause for 2013 to 2023 on our NOMIS webservice. This explorable dataset can be used to extract figures where myocarditis (I40) was recorded as the underlying cause of death.
