Thank you for your request.

The information you have referenced presents data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW). We do not hold statistics relating to the number of active gangs, however the CSEW collects some information on the proportion of children aged 10 to 15 and adults aged 16 to 29 who are a member of a street gang however it does not collect information on crimes relating to street gangs.

These questions are asked in CSEW survey years 2013/14 to 2019/20.

Unfortunately, we are unable to publish the dataset you have requested as it is considered personal information.  Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it an offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board for statistical purposes that would identify an individual or a body corporate. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified, we find that Section 44 of the  Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies. Section 44  is an absolute exemption and no consideration of the public interest test needs to be applied.

If you would like to conduct the analysis yourself on these questions, it is possible for you to access the CSEW data you are interested in. CSEW datasets are available from the UK Data Service. Guidance on how to access the data can be found here on the UK Data Service website.

Researchers are also able to access record-level data from the CSEW. The ONS has an established route for accessing this microdata, through our Secure Research Service (SRS). To access microdata, researchers will need to submit a request for access that gives details about the project that they would like to carry out.

CSEW data up to the year ending March 2020 is available via both the UK Data Archive (UKDA) and the SRS for researchers to access.

We may also be able to commission a bespoke analysis with specific information included to suit your needs. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
