Thank you for your request.

We publish statistics taken from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and crimes recorded by the police.

Sexual assaults measured by the CSEW cover rape or assault by penetration (including attempts), and indecent exposure or unwanted touching. The CSEW is a victimisation survey and primarily collects information relating to victims, it does not collect information relating to the ethnicity of the perpetrator as the victim may not be able to accurately determine this.

Statistics from the year ending March 2017 CSEW relating to the ethnicity of victims of sexual assault were published alongside the article Sexual offences in England and Wales: year ending March 2017. Table 10 within the Sexual offences: appendix tables shows the prevalence of sexual assault in the last year among adults aged 16 to 59, by personal characteristics and sex.

The equivalent tables for previous years were published alongside the Focus on violent crime and sexual offences publications. I have provided links to the relevant tables below.

Crime Statistics: Appendix Tables - Focus on: Violent Crime and Sexual Offences, 2011/12 – Table 4.08

Prior to 2012, these data were published by the Home Office. At this time, statistics relating to ethnicity of victims of sexual assaults were only produced every two years. I have provided a link to the 2009/10 table below.

Homicides, Firearm Offences and Intimate Violence 2009/10: Supplementary Volume 2 to Crime in England and Wales 2009/10 data tables 2nd Edition - Table 3.06

Home Office police recorded crime data are not available broken down by ethnicity of the victims.

We do not hold data that relates to convictions for sexual offences. This data is held and published by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ). They may be able to provide you with information on the ethnicity of offenders and can be contacted directly at statistics.enquiries@justice.gsi.gov.uk.

If you would like any further information, you can simply email us at CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
