Please would you provide data in relation to:

  • the number of racist/ religious hate incidents reported which involved a member of parliament, local councillor or party member separated into different political parties.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry regarding racist or religious hate incidents.

The Home Office are responsible for publishing data on hate crimes recorded by the police. They produce an annual report which provides data on the types of offences recorded as hate crimes. Hate Crime, England and Wales, 2017 to 2018 is the most recent release of this report. Table 2.01 in the Hate Crime, England and Wales, 2017/18- Appendix Tables details hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales, by police force area and region – this includes recorded hate crime data for the two monitored hate crime strands: Race and Religion.

On the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW), we ask whether an incident was deemed by the victim to be a hate crime. National level data from the CSEW can also be found in the Home Office Hate Crime, England and Wales, 2017/18- Appendix Tables. Due to the low volume of hate crime incidents in the sample survey, the figures are not sufficiently robust to report for a single year of the CSEW or at regional level.

We do not publish data for Scotland or Northern Ireland. Crime statistics for Scotland and Northern Ireland can be found on the Scottish Government and the Northern Ireland Statistics Research Agency websites:

We do not collect information on the number of racist or religious hate incidents involving Members of Parliament, Local Councillors, or Party Members.

It is possible the Home Office may hold more detailed information about the groups affected by racist or religious hate incidents. They can be contacted by email at: CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

If you have any further crime related queries in the future, please feel free to email CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
