FOI REF: FOI-2023-1307
You asked
I am looking for employment data for each government department - name and how many employees per department. For clarity, I'm looking for all departments including Central government, NHS trusts, Councils, Education authorities, military branches etc.
We said
Thank you for your request.
Unfortunately, we do not hold organisation level data for the whole public sector since a proportion of our input data is received as aggregates only, e.g., NHS trusts, military branches, police forces etc. Therefore, we are unable to supply the data as requested.
There are other publicly available sources of organisation level data, which may be of use. Some of these are national statistics, others not. These are not comprehensive, but do cover a number of public sector organisation's employment data.
It is important to note, however, that these data will not necessarily align with the official Public Sector Employment (PSE) statistics owing to differing concepts, definitions and timing.
- NHS in England workforce statistics
- NHS in Scotland workforce
- NHS in Wales staffing
- Health & social care in Northern Ireland staff numbers
- Police, England and Wales workforce
- Scotland Police officer numbers
- Northern Ireland police service statistics
HM Forces numbers – Please note, the ONS numbers do not include volunteers or locally engaged staff hence the difference.
- Education (Academies and local authority schools in England) workforce
- Local authorities in England and Wales: Public Sector Employment Survey
- Local authorities in Scotland (table 8 of the download) employment statistics
- Civil Service Public sector employment reference tables
