FOI REF: FOI/2023/4900

You asked

I'm trying to understand public adherence to dog lead requirements in the UK, with relation to PSPOs.

Are you able to advise on the below, please:

  • The volume of cases raised against dog owners who have failed use leads in protected areas
  • The amount of on-the-spot fines issued
  • The amount of cases brought to court

I don't mind what time period the above information relates to. I'm just trying to get a sense of owner compliance & use of deterrents.

Thank you for your enquiry relating to the public adherence to dog lead requirements in the UK.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the information that you have requested. We publish data relating to crime statistics from two main sources: The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and crime recorded by the police. The CSEW is a victimisation survey, and police recorded crime covers the offences reported to and recorded by the police.

Statistics relating to convictions are primarily collected by the Ministry of Justice, and they may be able to provide further assistance. They can be contacted at ESD@justice.gov.uk.

If you have any crime-related queries in the future, please email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
