You asked

I would like to know:

  • How many times a criminal has been successfully prosecuted with the help of the Investigatory Powers Act since it was put in place
  • How many people have been sentenced for refusing to give law enforcement and/or security and intelligence staff the password(s) for their electronic devices since 2016

Thank you for your enquiry relating to criminal prosecutions and sentencing since 2016.

Unfortunately, we do not hold the information that you have requested. We publish data relating to crime statistics from two main sources: The Crime Survey for England and Wales and crime recorded by the police. Neither of these sources hold data related to the sentencing of the offenders and we are therefore unable to provide you with statistics on the information you have requested.

Statistics relating to convictions are primarily collected by the Ministry of Justice, and they may be able to provide further assistance. They can be contacted at the following email address: statistics.enquiries@justice.gov.uk.
