You asked

Please could you provide the following data:

By measures: Proportion of Import and Export Currency Transactions by industry and all (or major) currencies

By year: 2010 - 2018

By Industry of Use: 2 digits SIC 2007 (Goods and Services)

Could you also provide us with information on the following related questions:

  1. What is the primary source of these data?

  2. What is the definition used to define the currency of invoicing?

  3. Would it be possible to get the proportions weighted by the value of trade in that industry-currency?

Thank you for your request.

The statistics you have requested on the proportion of import and export currency transactions, weighted by the value of trade, by two-digit-SIC industry and currency are not currently held by us for the years 2010-2018. This information is held, on an item-weighted currency count basis, for September 2016 and was published as an ad hoc request on 20 February 2017:

The primary sources of the published tables are the Monthly Survey for Import Price Indices and the Monthly Survey for Export Price Indices. The currency of invoicing was taken from responses to these surveys detailing the price of imported and exported items, where respondents were asked to supply the currency, price and unit.

You have also asked if these statistics can be provided on a value-of-trade-weighted basis. The published statistics do use weights based on the value of trade. At the individual respondent level, however, equal weights are applied thus producing an item-weighted currency count basis.

We may be able to create the information you require, however there are limitations in producing this analysis. We will be happy to discuss what is possible. To arrange this please contact the Economic Advice and Analysis Division at: economic.advice@ons.go.uk
