You asked

I'm writing to you to request information regarding the procurement of a population density dataset per Built Up Area Sub-Division (BUASD) boundary with its corresponding boundary ID and boundary coordinates. I've found the population dataset from: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/construct/summary.asp?mode=construct&version=0&dataset=2010 However, it does not have a BUASD ID or coordinates related to BUASD coordinates. Please kindly advise me on the necessary steps to obtain the data.

Thank you for your request.

We do not produce any estimates at a Built Up Area Sub-Division (BUASD) level, however the data to calculate the estimates is available.

It is possible to calculate this information, please see the following step-by-step guide:

  1. Obtain standard area measurements from ONS Geoportal, accessible via the following link: Standard Area Measurements (2011) for 2011 Census Areas in England and Wales.

  2. Obtain the lookup for output areas to Built up areas from the ONS Geoportal: Output Area (2011) to Built-up Area Sub-division to Built-up Area to Local Authority District to Region (December 2011) Lookup in England and Wales.

  3. Combine 1) and 2) and calculate the land area for each built up area (combine by linking on output area code). We use Area to Mean High Water Excluding Area of Inland Water (Land Area) (AREALHECT) as the land area variable.

  4. Divide the population for each built up area (taken from NOMIS) by the land area to derive population density.

Should you require any assistance with your calculations, please contact our populations team at pop.info@ons.gov.uk.
