Portuguese nationals in the UK

You asked

I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from the relevant department.

Please could you provide me with: 

1. The number of Portuguese people in each authority area/district/county, categorised by: 

• Nationality 

• Country of birth 

• Language spoken (if available) 

• Descent (if available)

2. Educational attainment rates for Portuguese people in each authority area, if such data is collected and available. 

Please provide the information in the form of an electronic spreadsheet or other similar document format.

Thank you for your freedom of information request. 

Census 2021 is currently our best estimate of the population of England and Wales by country of birth and passports held. However, Census does not collect data specifically on nationality, as nationality can be perceived in several different ways.

Please see the associated datasets for passports held, national identity and country of birth for Portugal. 

The associated download also provides the highest level of qualification by main language dataset provides educational attainment for usual residents whose main language is Portuguese. 

Information on descendants is not available in the published data but it may be possible to provide information for children (of any age, or dependent children) based on their parents COB, providing they live in the same house as bespoke analysis. This would need to be commissioned via our commissioned table service.
