How many places of worship (church, mosque, temple, etc.) for each denomination were requested to provide information to the Office of National Statistics for the year 2018?

Thank you for your request. The Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) contains all businesses registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay As You Earn (PAYE) and this register is used to sample businesses for our surveys. The data on the IDBR are broken down into Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. SIC code 9491 covers activities of religious organisations. This is the lowest level of SIC code available for this activity. This SIC includes "activities of religious organisations or individuals providing services directly to worshippers in churches, mosques, temples, synagogues or other places." Unfortunately, these data are not broken down further into individual denominations.
In March 2018, there were 11,625 organisations in SIC 9491 registered for VAT and/or PAYE. 937 organisations were selected for a business survey during 2018.
