Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for the production of Mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

However, using the Deaths registered in England and Wales publication for 2019, which is the latest available data there were 530,841 deaths registered in England and Wales. Using tables 4 and 5 there were 128,596 deaths registered for men aged 80 and over and 167,693 deaths registered for women age 80 and over, giving a total of 296,289 deaths registered in this age group.

Therefore, 56% of deaths registered in 2019 were for people aged 80 and over.
